Position Details: 

Provide safety leadership and strategic direction to the facility. This position will create long term value for the organization by ensuring that safety & health excellence and performance improvement is facilitated through the culture; that safety & health strategies effectively address the site's risk profile; Compliance management systems are effectively applied to safety and health programs, process safety methodologies and practices are sustained in covered processes and applied beyond those covered processes, and appropriate leading and trailing metrics are effectively utilized.

The ideal candidate must be able to embrace and facilitate change, possess strong interpersonal skills, and have the capacity to efficiently balance multiple activities, programs, and priorities. The candidate will serve as a mentor for mill leadership and all employees for the value creation associated with a process safety approach to managing operations.  The position requires enhanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of audiences. The successful candidate must be self-motivated, demonstrate good judgment and sound decision making skills, good organization skills, and the ability to lead through others in maintaining and improving the safety and health process and performance of the operation.


This position has responsibility for occupational safety & health and reports directly to the site's General Manager.
  • Provide leadership and direction to achieve the safety & health vision through management commitment and employee ownership. 
  • Ensures the facility safety vision remains evergreen, describes the vision of a better state and that employee objectives are connected to the vision.
  • Facilitate the organization’s safety & health ownership through integration of the safety & health management system.
  • Lead the development of risk assessment methods/systems for anticipating, identifying, and evaluating hazards.  Communicate and expect from employees a vision of lowering risk tolerance / preference.
  • Assist facility leadership with the development of short and long-term safety & health objectives, targets, strategies, and measures that identify critical hazards, prioritize, and mitigate risks.
  • Oversight of evaluation, interpretation, and compliance with safety and health laws, regulations and permits as it relates to the operation of the facility.
  • Provide a good foundation and solid understanding of Georgia-Pacific safety and health standards and all OSHA and Federal and State regulations.
  • Utilize development plans to grow safety & health talent, skills, and knowledge.
  • Ensure the development, improvement, and implementation of training systems to meet facility needs.
  • Facilitate and represent the facility during agency inspections and regulatory interactions.
Basic Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum 5 years Safety & Health experience in an industrial, chemical process or manufacturing environment
  • Prior safety & health leadership experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in safety, engineering, or related field
  • Experience in a process safety management environment
  • Prior work experience in an integrated pulp and paper manufacturing facility
  • Experience in heavy manufacturing and/or chemical processes
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification or demonstrated progress to achieve CSP
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Software (Access – database creation/tracking and reporting, Excel – sorting data and creating tables, Outlook – scheduling, Word – document creation/editing and PowerPoint – presentation creation/editing)
